Dale & Debbie Part 59 - Across the Border into Canada

Dale & Debbie Part 59 - Across the Border into Canada

25th Jun 2025

Our latest journey took us across the Seaway Skyway Bridge into Ontario, Canada, where we explored charming towns, scenic coastlines, and natural wonders galore. From waterfall hikes in Owen Sound to beach strolls on Lake Huron, ferry sightings in Tobermory, and peaceful moments at Fifty Point Conservation Area, our trip into Canada was packed with adventure.

Cobourg Town Hall

Dale met friends Bryce & Jan in town for lunch and a tour one day. I was feeling poorly so I missed out. And we only had one day to explore this town. Fortunately, I felt well enough to quickly see Cobourg that evening. And even more fortunately, the four of us are staying at the same place this winter!

Our next stop was the city of Owen Sound, located on the beautiful Georgian Bay. Friends George & Shelly were wonderful tour guides!

In the background is the Niagra Escarpment as it goes under the waters of the Georgian Bay.

Dale and I decided to go hiking one day to check out some nearby waterfalls. George & Shelly are not hikers, but they do walk a lot. Anyway, they decided to go with us. The hikes were fun, but the waterfalls were disappointing at that time.

We walked along Sauble Beach on Lake Huron.

The Chi-Cheemaun Ferry runs between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island, which is the largest freshwater island in the WORLD! It contains more than 108 freshwater lakes, and some have their own islands! Lake Maintou is the world’s largest lake located on Manitoulin Island.

This gets even better…

Treasure Island is found on Lake Mindemoya, which is located in the center of Manitoulin Island. It has the distinction of being the largest island in a lake on an island in a lake in the world!

I realize that’s more information than one may need to know, but I think it’s very interesting and quite amazing!

We did not make it to Manitoulin Island this visit. The Chi-Cheemaun was docked in Tobermory when we arrived to take a much smaller ferry to Flowerpot Island for the day. Tobermory is located at the northern tip of Bruce Peninsula.  It’s home to Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park.

These parks are neighbors ~ the entire area is gorgeous! We will allow more time for exploration on our next visit.

We passed the Big Tub Lighthouse and viewed the Sweepstakes Ship Wreckage in Big Tub Harbour on our way to the island.

Flowerpot Island is part of Fathom Five and is uninhabited.

We hiked across the island and saw this yucky-looking pond. The western shore was a bit different from the eastern.

Our next stop was Hamilton. We stayed at Fifty Point Conservation Area on Lake Ontario. Hamilton is known to have more than 100 waterfalls! The issue when we were there was the heat. It was too hot to hike, but we managed to get one day in.

The next six photos were taken at the conservation area.

Many vegetable farms, fruit orchards, and vineyards can be found in this part of Ontario. We enjoyed some very fresh produce!

It was a rainy day as we traveled back to the States. We crossed at the Buffalo port of entry and headed toward Erie, PA.

Until next time,
Debbie & Dale
