In southern California about 80 miles northeast of San Diego you will find the small town of Borrego Springs. It’s situated in the extreme western Sonoran Desert and is completely surrounded by Anza-Borrego State Park, California’s largest state park. Our main reason for visiting the area was the state park, but once we arrived we found so much more including larger than life sculptures. The Metal Art Sculptures of Borrego Springs are simply awesome! There are more than 130 spread throughout and around town. It’s like a free, outside museum! There’s even a map for those interested in finding certain ones or all of them. They are inspired by fossil treasures, the history and nature of the Anza-Borrego Desert as well as whim and fantasy. They have all been created by Ricardo Breceda; he keeps saying he’s not going to do anymore and then another one pops up. It’s worth a trip there just to see them! There’s a lot more to see in Borrego Springs than these magnificent sculptures so I may write more about it down the road. In the meantime, below are some of our favorites. While looking at the pictures don’t forget to notice the surroundings. Most were placed in such fitting areas. |
